Come, Follow Me Daily Study Guide for the week of February 10-16, 2020 covering 2 Nephi 6-10. For personal and/or family study of the scriptures, geared towards 8 years old and older.
*This is a suggested outline that coincides with the Come, Follow Me manual. There is not just one right way when it comes to studying the scriptures. Everyone should study in a way that is best for them, but I do hope that you find these outlines helpful.
**I highly suggest getting a scripture journal. Throughout the year there will be several times that I will suggest jotting something down in your scripture journal. These are also great for writing down any impressions or “Aha” moments that you might have as you study the scriptures.

THE LORD WILL ALWAYS FULFILL HIS PROMISES
BACKGROUND
What does the word PROMISE mean?
On a scale 1-5 (5 being the best), how well would you trust the following people to keep a promise? (May ask family members to answer by a show of fingers)
- Your Mom
- Your mailman
- The guy who just stole a candy bar from the grocery store
- A good friend
- A salesperson on the phone
- Someone who has lied to you before
- Your Bishop
- A prisoner at a penitentiary
- The stranger behind you in the checkout line at Walmart
- The Lord
Is it hard to keep promises?
Why is it important to keep our promises?
How does it make you feel when someone doesn’t keep their promise to you?
How does it make you feel when someone does keep their promise to you?
To help the Nephites understand that they were part of the house of Israel and that they could trust God and His promises, Jacob quoted prophecies of Isaiah which are recorded in 2 Nephi chapters 6-8.
In these chapters, Isaiah describes the scattering of Israel and the Savior’s promise to gather and redeem His people. Just like the Nephites, we too are a part of the house of Israel. We too can trust in God’s promise to redeem His people.
SCRIPTURE/MINI LESSON
Why was Israel scattered?
QUOTE BY ELDER BRUCE R MCCONKIE: “… Our Israelite forebears were scattered because they rejected the gospel, defiled the priesthood, forsook the church, and departed from the kingdom. They were scattered because they turned from the Lord, worshipped false gods, and walked in all the ways of the heathen nations. They were scattered because they forsook the Abrahamic covenant, trampled under their feet the holy ordinances, and rejected the Lord Jehovah, who is the Lord Jesus, of whom all their prophets testified. Israel was scattered for apostasy. The Lord in his wrath, because of their wickedness and rebellion, scattered them among the heathen in all the nations of the earth…”
Although the house of Israel was scattered due to their disobedience, the Savior promised to gather them once again. Read the following scripture to find out what will lead to the gathering of Israel.
READ: 2 Nephi 6:11
What will lead to the gathering of the house of Israel? (When they come to the knowledge of their Redeemer)
What does this mean for me today? What is my part in the gathering of Israel?
FINISH THE QUOTE BY ELDER BRUCE R MCCONKIE: “What, then, is involved in the gathering of Israel? The gathering of Israel consists in believing and accepting and living in harmony with all that the Lord once offered his ancient chosen people. It consists of having faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, of repenting, of being baptized and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and of keeping the commandments of God. It consists of believing the gospel, joining the Church, and coming into the kingdom. It consists of receiving the holy priesthood, being endowed in holy places with power from on high, and receiving all the blessings of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, through the ordinance of celestial marriage” (A New Witness for the Articles of Faith [1985], 515).
The Savior’s promise that He shall once again gather the house of Israel is being fulfilled as we speak. We are privileged to live at such a time where we are not only witnesses but we also get to play a part in the fulfillment of this promise. The Savior always keeps His promises.
On June 3, 2018, President Nelson invited all the youth of the church to join the Lord’s Battalion to help gather Israel. Although we may not all be a part of the “youth” President Nelson was speaking to, we are all young at heart and the Lord is counting on each of us to participate in this great work. The Lord needs all of us!
As a reminder of what President Nelson said in 2018, watch the following short video.

What an exciting time it is to be a part of the greatest gathering event in history! Are you ready and willing to enlist? Are there any changes in your life that you need to make to be worthy of such a responsibility? What can you do today to help gather Israel? (You may choose to write your thoughts to these questions in your scripture journals)
PONDER & DISCUSS
The second part of the Savior’s promise was that He shall redeem His people.
READ: 2 Nephi 8:11
How can remembering these promised blessings help you remain faithful during times of temptation?
How is knowing that the Savior always keeps his promises make you feel?

COME UNTO CHRIST AND RECEIVE THE GLORIOUS BLESSINGS OF HIS ATONEMENT
BACKGROUND
Jesus Christ came “into the world that he may save all men if they will hearken unto his voice” (2 Nephi 9:21; italics added). In other words, we must be willing to accept the saving blessings He offers. After describing the great plan of redemption, Jacob gave important warnings and invitations…to help us receive the blessings of the Atonement. (CFM, pg 27)
SCRIPTURE/MINI LESSON
(Taken from Scripture Study for Latter-day Saint Families, Book of Mormon)
Scan 2 Nephi 9:27-38 and mark how many times Jacob uses the word WO. Wo means sorry, grief, or deep suffering.
READ: 2 Nephi 9:27
All these “woes” apply to those who know the commandments but refuse to repent and obey them.
READ: 2 Nephi 9:28-38 and answer the following questions:
Verse 28- What are some examples of “the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men”? What can we do to place more value on the things of God and less on the things of the world?
Verse 30 –What would the Lord have us do with our riches?
Verses 31-32 – What is the difference between a person who is deaf or blind and a person who “will not hear” or “will not see”?
Verse 33 – Who are the “uncircumcised of heart”? (Those who are proud and rebellious and do not take their covenants to heart)
Verse 36 – What does it mean to “perish,” “die,” or “be thrust down to hell”? (See D&C 19:15-18)
Verse 38 –What do you think it would feel like to “return to God, and behold His face, and remain in [your] sins”? Would “wo” be a good description of that feeling?
PONDER & DISCUSS
In verse 51, Jacob speaks again of riches and also of how we spend our time.
List in your scripture journal how you have spent your money in the past week. Also, make a list of how you spent your time.
READ: 2 Nephi 9:51.
What does Jacob teach us about how we should spend our time and money? Evaluate your lists and how you are doing.
SHARE STORY FROM HUGH NIBLEY: I think of Hisham, the mightiest palace an Arab ever built, just outside of Jericho… the prince took twenty-seven years to build it, and it was going to be the finest palace in the world. It was the finest palace; it was magnificent . . . The night he was to enter it for the housewarming, there came a great earthquake. He had a heart attack and died, and the palace was completely destroyed. They were to have this big housewarming, and everybody was to come. After twenty-seven years, poof, that’s what happened. (Hugh Nibley, Teachings of the Book of Mormon, Semester 2, Lecture 41, pp. 5,6)
How would the prince’s life have been different had he spent his money and time for those 27 years focusing on helping others instead of completing his palace?

CROSS-REFERENCE: Also go to Mosiah 4: 13-15 then answer the following question.
What are some behaviors of a person who is spiritually minded? (The word succor means “run to support, to help or relieve”)
Are there any other behaviors you would add?

MINI LESSON
Listen to Jacob as he encourages the Nephites to cheer up their hearts and to be reconciled with God.
WATCH: (3:08) Jacob Encourages the Nephites to Be Reconciled with God, Click HERE
PONDER & DISCUSS
What do you find that gives you hope?
What will you do to remember these things when you feel discouraged?
What did Jacob mean when he said: “reconcile yourselves to the will of God”? Even after we choose to obey God, something else is necessary to be saved and return to live with Heavenly Father. Look up “reconcile” in the dictionary as you discuss what it means.
GENERAL CONFERENCE DAY
Study a recent General Conference talk. A great way to study a conference talk is to have your own conference issue of the Ensign and a highlighter. Listen to the talk and as you listen, highlight the part(s) that stands out to you. Then after the talk, review and/or share and discuss what you have highlighted.
THIS WEEK’S TALK: The Joy of the Saints By Elder D. Todd Christofferson, Click HERE
SUMMARY: Saints are those who have entered into the gospel covenant through baptism and are striving to follow Christ as His disciples. Thus, the ‘joy of the saints’ denotes the joy of becoming Christlike.” Joy comes from keeping God’s commandments, overcoming sorrow and weakness through Christ and serving as the Savior served. Keeping the Lord’s commandments enables us more easily and more fully to feel His love, with the strait and narrow path of the commandments leading directly to the tree of life. We can find joy in overcoming misery in whatever form — sin, trial, weakness or any other obstacle to happiness. “This is the joy of sensing progress in the path of discipleship; the joy of ‘having received a remission of sins and having peace of conscience’ (Mosiah 4:3); the joy of feeling one’s soul expand and grow through the grace of Christ.” The fruits of our service to one another in the Church are part of the joy set before us. “Even in times of discouragement or stress, we can minister patiently if we are focused on the joy of pleasing God and bringing light, relief and happiness to His children, our brothers and sisters.” The ultimate “joy of the saints” comes in knowing that the Savior pleads their cause, and no one can conceive of the joy which will fill our souls as we hear Jesus pray for us unto the Father (3 Nephi 17:17).
