An old tale about a Cherokee teaching his grandson a wise lesson using two wolves as an analogy. This lesson goes along with Alma 3:26.
THE TALE OF TWO WOLVES
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”
He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
ALMA 3:26
Alma and Amlici, by Scott M. Snow; Used for educational purposes
Many times throughout the scriptures, we read of righteous people who let pride take over their hearts and the destruction or misery that resulted from their prideful actions.
In Alma 3:26, after a terrible battle, we read:
And in one year were thousands and tens of thousands of souls sent to the eternal world, that they might reap their rewards according to their works, whether they were good or whether they were bad, to reap eternal happiness or eternal misery, according to the spirit which they listed to obey, whether it be a good spirit or a bad one.
How important it is to not let the spirit which leads to eternal misery take over. Fight for the good. Surround yourself with the good things of this world as you continually pray and keep the commandments of God. If you do, you will reap the reward of eternal happiness.
