Come, Follow Me Daily Study Guide for the week of June 22-28, 2020 covering Alma 17-22. For personal and/or family study of the scriptures, geared towards families with teenagers, single adults, and empty nesters.
*This is a suggested outline that coincides with the Come, Follow Me manual. There is not just one right way when it comes to studying the scriptures. Everyone should study in a way that is best for them, but I do hope that you find these outlines helpful.
**I highly suggest getting a scripture journal. Throughout the year there will be several times that I will suggest jotting something down in your scripture journal. These are also great for writing down any impressions or “Aha” moments that you might have as you study the scriptures.

RIGHTEOUS DESIRES RESULT IN RIGHTEOUS ACTIONS
BACKGROUND/SCRIPTURE
Ammon goes to teach King Lamoni and his people. Something to note is that Lamoni was the leader of “a wild and a hardened and a ferocious people”
READ: Alma 17:14
Going to preach to a people that delighted in killing people like you, had to be hard. You can only imagine the kind of courage, testimony, and strength that Ammon possessed.
MINI LESSON
Listen to the story of Ammon from John Bytheway:
QUOTE BY HENRY B. EYRING:
“Thousands of times every day, members of the Church are watched…by people curious to know something about our lives. Because we are under covenant to be witnesses, we will try to tell them how the gospel has brought us happiness. What they think of what we say may depend largely on how much they sense we care for them. Those we meet will feel the love…It may not be in hours or days as it was for King Lamoni, but they will feel our love after testing our hearts. And when they find our concern sincere, the Holy Spirit can more easily touch them to allow us to teach and to testify, as it did for Ammon.” (“Witnesses for God,” Henry B. Eyring)
PONDER & DISCUSS
Ammon’s actions were the results of his righteous desires and the power he received was because of his actions. If we want heavenly power, we need to develop heavenly desires. These desires come through scripture study, fasting, and prayer.
If someone watched your actions for a week, how would they describe your desires?
In what ways have your desires to serve and treat others changed because of scripture study, fasting, and prayer?

TRUST AND TESTIMONY NEEDED FOR MISSIONARY WORK
BACKGROUND
(Taken from Scripture Study for Latter-day Saint Families)
OBJECT LESSON: Ask someone in your family to stand up and put on a blindfold. Have another family member stand behind that person. Ask the blindfolded person to stretch out his or her arms to the side, fall backward, and trust that the other person will catch him or her.
Then discuss the following questions.
- Was it easy or hard to trust the person to catch you and why?
- What has that person done to earn your trust?
- Why is it easier to trust some people than others?
- What are some things we can do to build relationships of trust with others?
SCRIPTURE
READ: Alma 18: 23
What do you see in that verse that shows that King Lamoni trusted Ammon?
MINI LESSON
QUOTE: President Hinckley, speaking to those not of our faith, once said, “To these we say in a spirit of love, bring with you all that you have of good and truth which you have received from whatever source, and come and let us see if we may add to it.” (Ensign, November 2002)
- What do you think President Hinckley meant by that statement?
- What are some good and true beliefs those not of our faith have and follow?
- Teaching someone the gospel, would it be important to build on those beliefs or disregard them? Why?

PONDER & DISCUSS
Referring to the video and to Alma 18: 24-39, answer the following questions:
- What is one truth that Ammon and Lamoni had in common? (verses 24-28)
- What is the first thing Ammon taught about God? (verses 28-32)
- How did Ammon’s teachings about the creation add to what the king already knew?
- After teaching that God is the creator of all things, what truths did Ammon teach next? (verses 36-38)
- What did Ammon teach to correct some false traditions the Lamanites had? (verses 37-38)
- After teaching about the Fall of Adam, what truth did Ammon teach next? (verse 39)
- Why do you think Ammon taught about the Fall of Adam before he taught about the plan of redemption?
- What was Lamoni’s response to Ammon’s message?
- Why is it important for us to have a testimony of these truths?

- What does this teach you about how important each person is in the Lord’s plan?
QUOTES
Share the following quotes from the New Era article “Abish and the Queen”
…Sister Elaine S. Dalton, former Young Women General President, pointed out that “the people who heard [Abish] testify became a people who ‘were converted unto the Lord, [and] never did fall away,’ and their sons became the stripling warriors!” Just let that sink in! Because Abish and the Lamanite queen had such great faith, they helped create a ripple effect that was felt for generations.
…No matter who you are or what your circumstances might be, you can influence others for the better through your gifts, your willingness to act and invite, and your faith in Jesus Christ. It doesn’t matter if you’re a queen or a servant or anything in between—you can always make a difference when you use your gifts for good. So act in faith, invite others to come unto Christ, and believe! With Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ on your side, you can make much more of a difference than you may realize.

GENERAL CONFERENCE DAY
Study a recent General Conference talk. A great way to study a conference talk is to have your own conference issue of the Ensign and a highlighter. Listen to the talk and as you listen, highlight the part(s) that stands out to you. Then after the talk, review and/or share and discuss what you have highlighted.
THIS WEEK’S TALK: Prayers of Faith By President Henry B. Eyring, click HERE
SUMMARY: In the restoration of the gospel, each person’s part is vital. The work of the Lord in the last days is one of vast magnitude and grandeur. To participate in the work of the Lord, each person has to grow in spiritual power. “When we … strive to obey and live the commandments, we grow in our power to receive continuing revelation.” The key to receiving revelation from God, as shown by Joseph Smith, is the prayer of faith. “As we face today’s challenges and those yet to come, we too will need to practice the same pattern.” Latter-day Saints can turn to words from the sacrament prayers as descriptors of daily life: “Always remember Him” and “keep His commandments.” A prayer offered with faith in Jesus Christ ushered in this last dispensation. “And it will be at the heart of the part each of us will play in its continuing unfolding.” Each person’s ability to make a vital contribution to the restoration will increase as faith in Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father grows.
