Come, Follow Me Daily Study Guide for the week of October 19-25, 2020 covering 3 Nephi 27-4 Nephi. For personal and/or family study of the scriptures, geared towards families with teenagers, single adults, and empty nesters.  

*This is a suggested outline that coincides with the Come, Follow Me manual. There is not just one right way when it comes to studying the scriptures. Everyone should study in a way that is best for them, but I do hope that you find these outlines helpful.

**I highly suggest getting a scripture journal. Throughout the year there will be several times that I will suggest jotting something down in your scripture journal. These are also great for writing down any impressions or “Aha” moments that you might have as you study the scriptures.

TRANSLATED BEINGS

BACKGROUND/SCRIPTURE

Ask if anyone knows what this is a picture of. Then explain: 

In 3 Nephi 28, Jesus asked his disciples, “What is it that ye desire of me, after that I am gone to the Father?” (vs 1) All of them except for three desired to live to the age of a man (72 years old) and then “speedily come unto thee in thy kingdom.” (vs 2) The other three disciples desired to “never taste of death” and to live upon the earth to minister and to “behold the doings of the Father…even until all things shall be fulfilled” (vs 7) and Christ comes again.

In order to do this, they became translated beings and are still upon the earth today.

Ask your family to share what they know about translated beings.

ACTIVITY: (Adapted from Scripture Study for Latter-day Saint Families)

Have the following verse numbers from 3 Nephi 28 written on separate strips of paper:

7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17-18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 36-37, 38, 39, 40

• Put the strips in a box or container. 
• Have family members take turns drawing a paper strip out of the box until they are all gone.
• Have them look up the verses and write some brief information about what they learned on translated beings on the strips of paper.
• Then have each person share what they learned about translated beings.

“Some mortals have been translated. In this state they are not subject to sorrow or to disease or to death. No longer does blood (the life-giving element of our present mortality) flow in their veins….They have power to move and live in both a mortal and an unseen sphere. All translated beings undergo another change in their bodies when they gain full immortality. This change is the equivalent of a resurrection.” (The Millennial Messiah)

MINI LESSON/PONDER & DISCUSS

Referring to the following verses: 3 Nephi 28:17–18, 36–40

What can we learn from Mormon’s example when he did not understand everything about the change that happened to the three Nephite disciples? What can we do when we don’t understand everything about a gospel principle?

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf taught: “God cares about you. He will listen, and He will answer your personal questions. The answers to your prayers will come in His own way and in His own time, and therefore, you need to learn to listen to His voice” (“Receiving a Testimony of Light and Truth,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2014, 21; CFM manual).

GUIDE TO THE SCRIPTURES: Translated Beings

 

 

CONVERSION TO JESUS CHRIST AND HIS GOSPEL LEADS TO UNITY & HAPPINESS

BACKGROUND

OBJECT LESSON: (Taken from Scripture Study for Latter-day Saint Families)

Invite your family to sit in a circle on the floor and close their eyes. Place a bag of grocery items (canned goods, produce, frozen foods, boxed items, and so on) in the middle of the family and tell them to open their eyes. Instruct family members to take as much food as possible. Once all the food is gone, ask family members to count how much they have. Then ask the following questions.

• How many of you would be willing to share your food with other family members so that everyone in the family could have the same amount?
• How many of you would rather not share your food?
• Which of these attitudes would help to build Zion?
• Do you think the Nephites who lived just after the time of Christ were the type of people who would share all that they had with each other, or would they hoard their goods so that no one else could have them? (Watch the following video to find out)

SCRIPTURE

There was great peace and prosperity at this time among the Nephites. 

READ: 4 Nephi 1: 1-3 and 12-18
As you read, have everyone mark or highlight the choices that the people made in order to experience this blessed life. 

MINI LESSON

ACTIVITY: (Adapted from an article in the Friend)

The Random Acts of Kindness Wall 

You will need two different colored note cards or sticky notes for this activity. (You can also cut up two different colors of paper into small squares the size of note cards or sticky notes)

Choose a place where your family can tape the notes up, such as a wall or door.

On one color of paper, write down all the nice things other people have done for you. Put each nice thing on its own piece of paper and tape it to the wall or door.

Using the other color of paper, write down all the Random Acts of Kindness that you can do in the coming week. Write each one down on its own paper and tape it to the wall or door. They can include such things as:

• Give up your spot in line
• Write a note to someone you love
• Give away something you don’t use
• Make someone smile
• Give someone a hug
• Smile at someone
• Tell your parents you love them
• Do something nice for a sibling
• Clean up a mess you didn’t make
• Sit by someone new at lunch
• Hold open the door for someone
• Give a nice compliment

Leave the wall up as a reminder. In one week, take the papers down together. As you do so, discuss which acts of kindness were performed, what additional ones were performed, and how it made you feel.

Meaning, individuals chose to be clean, unified, and have no contention or class distinctions, etc. Their individual agency, combined together, created a Zion community. WICKEDNESS LEADS TO DIVISION AND SORROW

BACKGROUND

OBJECT LESSON: As everyone is gathering together for scripture study, pick out one person and begin treating them like royalty. You could shower them with compliments, give them the best chair in the room, rub their feet or shoulders, and/or give them their favorite treat. 

Continue to treat this person like royalty as you ask everyone to turn to 4 Nephi and recall what you talked about yesterday during scripture study. (Which was how the Nephites lived in unity and happiness.)

Hopefully, at this point, others in the family will be suspicious or fed up with you showing so much special treatment to just one person. 

ASK:

• How did you feel when I was treating _____ like royalty? 
• Why did you begin to be annoyed or have bad feelings?
• Where do you think these feelings come from?
• Did any of you feel like “teaming up” against the royalty?

Sadly, the Zion society described in 4 Nephi (that we talked about yesterday) eventually unraveled. The Nephites began to experience similar feelings toward one another as some considered themselves to be “upper-class.” 

SCRIPTURE

Read the following set of verses. Using a whiteboard or large piece of paper, PAUSE after each set and make a list of attitudes and behaviors that caused this society to fall apart.

4 Nephi 1: 36-49

“There is something in the human heart of that character that when human beings are prospering they are apt to be lifted up in pride and to forget the cause or the source of their prosperity; they are apt to forget God, who is the fountain of all their blessings, and to give glory to themselves….God has sent us here and given unto us a mission on the earth not to accumulate riches, not to become worldly-minded, not to pile up the things of this world….The happiness of a people does not consist in the abundance of worldly things.”

Why do you think people have a hard time remembering God when they have plenty of money or worldly riches?

PONDER & DISCUSS

Referring to the list you made when reading the scripture verses, do you see any signs of these attitudes or behaviors in yourself? In your scripture journal write down anything you feel that you could work better on. 

As a family, brainstorm together ways that you can help your family, ward, or community live in greater unity and happiness.
