**I highly suggest getting a scripture journal. Throughout the year there will be several times that I will suggest jotting something down in your scripture journal. These are also great for writing down any impressions or “Aha” moments that you might have as you study the scriptures.

SCRIPTURE

SHARE QUOTE:

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”  -Pablo Picasso

Some people find it hard to recognize the gifts that their Father in Heaven has given them.

READ: Moroni 10:8

There are many ways a person might “deny … the gifts of God.” Some people deny that these gifts even exist. Others might deny that they have spiritual gifts but recognize them in other people. Still others deny their gifts by simply neglecting them or failing to develop them. (CFM manual)

MINI LESSON

Using a whiteboard or a large piece of paper: As a family write down all of the following gifts that you discuss. (The quote I use below was used in an FHE back in October but I felt it was worth repeating again)

  1. List the different spiritual gifts that you see in each other. (They could include ones you discussed at the very beginning.)
  2. List any additional gifts (that you have not written down yet) that you find in the following scripture passage. READ: Moroni 10:9-17
  3. List any more gifts that you find from the following quote:

QUOTE BY MARVIN J. ASHTON:

“Let us review some of these less-conspicuous gifts: the gift of asking; the gift of listening; the gift of hearing and using a still, small voice; the gift of avoiding contention; the gift of being agreeable; the gift of avoiding vain repetition; the gift of seeking that which is righteous; the gift of not passing judgment; the gift of looking to God for guidance; the gift of being a disciple; the gift of caring for others; the gift of being able to ponder; the gift of offering prayer; the gift of bearing a mighty testimony; and the gift of receiving the Holy Ghost.”

PONDER & DISCUSS

  • Looking at this long list, are there any more gifts that you believe that you might have that you didn’t mention before?
  • How can you come to know your gifts? (“We can reference our patriarchal blessing, ask those who know us best, and personally identify what you are naturally good at and enjoy. Most important, we can ask God. He knows our gifts, since He gave them to us. -Elder John C. Pingree Jr; CFM manual)
  • READ: Moroni 10:18 and ask why is it important to “remember that every good gift cometh of Christ”?
  • How can developing your strengths and gifts bring you joy?
  • Are there any of these gifts that you would like to have?
  • How do you go about receiving the gifts that you want or need? (Share the following two quotes to help answer this question.)

DALLIN H. OAKS said that “spiritual gifts come to those who have received the gift of the Holy Ghost,” but that they “do not come visibly, automatically, and immediately to all….The scriptures tell us that we should desire and zealously seek spiritual gifts.” (See D&C 46:8; 1 Cor. 12:31; 14:1)

QUOTE BY GEORGE Q CANNON:

“If any of us are imperfect, it is our duty to pray for the gift that will make us perfect. Have I imperfections? I am full of them. What is my duty? To pray to God to give me the gifts that will correct these imperfections. If I am an angry man, it is my duty to pray for charity, which suffereth long and is kind….So with all the gifts of the gospel. They are intended for this purpose.”

MEETING BEFORE THE PLEASING BAR OF GOD

BACKGROUND

VIDEO: Who Wants to Be A Millionaire Fail (5:13), click HERE

What happens when Matt is given a question but is pressured into giving the wrong answer?

Does the world put pressure on us today? Does the world try to convince us that there is no God? What else does the world try to convince us of?

SCRIPTURE/MINI LESSON/PONDER & DISCUSS

Regardless of what the world teaches us, Moroni tells us that the time speedily cometh when the Lord God shall ask each of us a specific question.

READ: Moroni 10:27-29,34

What question is the Lord going to ask us? (Refer to verse 27)

Moroni tells us that he will see us at the judgment bar of God. Do you remember who else in the Book of Mormon said they would see us at the judgment bar of God?

READ: 2 Nephi 33:10-15 to find out (You may want to cross-reference these verses with the verses in Moroni.)

**Sidenote: For more detailed information of everyone we will see at the judgment bar of God, check out the additional resource “The Judgment Seat of Christ” listed below. For today, I wanted to emphasize seeing the first and last writers of the Book of Mormon and how we will be asked why we did or did not heed the words of the Book of Mormon.

  • How neat will that be to see both Nephi and Moroni, the first and last writers of the Book of Mormon?
  • Why do you think we will stand before them?
  • What will they have to say to us?
  • Will we feel worthy to stand before them and before Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ?

SHARE QUOTE BY ELDER BENNETT:

“My heart sank during a recent meeting with wonderful Latter-day Saints. The question was asked, ‘Who desires to live with Heavenly Father again?’ Every hand went up. The next question was ‘Who has confidence you’ll succeed?’ Sadly and surprisingly, most hands went down” (“Your Next Step“, General Conference, October 2015).

Elder Bennett went on to say, “Our loving Heavenly Father rejoices in each and every faithful step [we take], and if we fall, He rejoices in each effort to get back up and try again….He will more than match our efforts with His power if we are willing to keep trying, repenting, and moving forward with faith in our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.”

  • How do you imagine you will feel when you meet Nephi and Moroni?
  • How do you imagine you will feel when you reunite with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ? With confidence will you be able to say that you tried your best?
  • What would you like to say to all of them?

**Remind everyone of their challenge to pray about the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and that you will all be sharing your answers/testimonies of the Book of Mormon tomorrow.

COME UNTO CHRIST – TESTIMONIES OF THE BOOK OF MORMON

BACKGROUND

MUSIC VIDEO: Come Unto Christ, click HERE

SCRIPTURE

Moroni shares such a powerful testimony of Christ and invites all to come unto Christ and be perfected in Him.

READ: Moroni 10:30-33

MINI LESSON

Our church leaders today also bear powerful testimonies of the Book of Mormon and invite us to come unto Christ that we may find hope and happiness in these the latter days.

VIDEO: Testimony of the Book of Mormon (4:39), click HERE

Discuss the challenge everyone was given at the beginning of the week to pray about the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. Then ask the following question and share the following insight before sharing your testimonies.

ASK: What if someone doesn’t know whether something is true yet?

INSIGHT FROM DAVID BUTLER: (Taken from Don’t Miss This)

“…What if someone doesn’t know whether something is true yet? What if they feel like they can’t stand before a congregation or say with conviction that they know for sure that God is real, that the Book of Mormon or Bible is true, that they know that the prophets are truly called of God, or that the Church is Jesus’s restored Church on the earth? What if they don’t know? This is why I love Moroni’s next teaching in his promise: ‘And whatsoever thing is good is…true.’ (Moroni 10:6) What if I can’t say I know something is true, but I do know that it is good? What if I can stand before a congregation and say with conviction that I know that God is good? Or I might not know the Book of Mormon is true, but I do know that it teaches good things. Or what if I’m not sure if the prophets are called of God, but I believe they are good men? And this church – I know it is a good, good church.

“What if I started there? What if the process of discovering truth simply begins by just asking if something is good?”

SHARING OF TESTIMONIES

Invite family members to share their testimonies of the Book of Mormon. If they feel unsure, invite them to share what they believe to be good as suggested by David Butler.

If your family would be more comfortable, you could also invite them to write their testimonies down in their scripture journals OR on a piece of paper and put them in your family history.

PONDER & DISCUSS

(OPTIONAL) As a segue or introduction to the Doctrine and Covenants coming up, it may be neat to watch the following video. As you watch it, ask family members to watch it from Moroni’s perspective. It is only fitting that Moroni, the last writer of the Book of Mormon, be the one to come to Joseph Smith. How neat it had to of been for Moroni to see the Book of Mormon play such a key part in the restoration of the gospel.
