Come, Follow Me Daily Study Guide for the week of May 10-16, 2021 covering Doctrine and Covenants 49-50. For personal and/or family study of the scriptures, geared towards families with teenagers.
*This is a suggested outline that coincides with the Come, Follow Me manual. These are my own thoughts and testimony combined with other resources that I have gathered. Everyone should study the scriptures in a way that’s best for them, but I do hope you find these outlines helpful.
*SCRIPTURE JOURNALS – I strongly suggest having a scripture journal. Many times my outlines will suggest writing something down in your scripture journal. These are also great for writing down any impressions or “Aha” moments that you might have as you study the scriptures.
*A free PDF DOWNLOAD of the Study Guide is available at the bottom of this post. You can also add Melanie’s Library to your mobile device home screen by following these instructions, click HERE
*SONGS – For a list of suggested songs for each day of the week, be sure and check out the blog called Music for Latter-day Life by clicking HERE. Suggestion for NON-SINGERS: Instead of singing, listen to the song suggested on Music for Latter-day Life and as you listen, write in our scripture journals how you have seen the hand of the Lord in your life or something you are grateful for. A great way to invite the Spirit to your scripture study.
FHE DAY

MARRIAGE BETWEEN MAN AND WOMAN IS ESSENTIAL TO GOD’S PLAN
BACKGROUND

SCRIPTURE
Is marriage an essential part of Heavenly Father’s plan?
READ: D&C 49:15-17
MINI LESSON
Elder David A. Bednar has given two reasons why marriage between a man and a woman is essential to Heavenly Father’s plan.
QUOTE BY ELDER DAVID A. BEDNAR: “Reason 1: The natures of male and female spirits complete and perfect each other, and therefore men and women are intended to progress together toward exaltation. … Reason 2: By divine design, both a man and a woman are needed to bring children into mortality and to provide the best setting for the rearing and nurturing of children”

The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.
- How is happiness in family life most likely to be achieved?
- What are the responsibilities for fathers?
- What are the responsibilities for mothers?
- Is there just one person in charge of the family or are mothers and fathers equal partners?
In April 2020 General Conference, Sister Jean B. Bingham talked about the roles that both men and women have and the importance of their working in unity as equal partners. Here is a small clip of what she said.

BACKGROUND/SCRIPTURE/LESSON
(Taken from CFM manual)

- READ: D&C 50:13-22
- Write down next to your drawing all of the words and phrases that you found that teach you something about gospel learning and teaching.
- Discuss what you found.
- What do we need to do in order to be a good teacher of the gospel?
- What do we need to do in order to be a good learner of the gospel?
President Eyring shares an experience he had while teaching a class that illustrates the powerful spiritual experiences teachers and students can have in class when they are all prepared.

Go around and have everyone share what stood out to them in the video.
ACTIVITY (Adapted from CFM manual)
- Turn off all the lights.
- With only the light from your device, have someone read the following verse.
- READ: D&C 50:23
- What are some things that do not edify and are not of God? (curse words, lies, pornography, gossiping, and so forth)
- Start turning lights back on by first lighting a single candle or turning on a flashlight and with that small light have someone read the following verse.
- READ: D&C 50:24
- Turn another light on such as a small lamp and ask the following.
- What does light represent? (The light of Christ, the gospel, truth, and so forth)
- Turn on another light in the house and ask someone to read the following verse.
- READ: D&C 50:25
- Finish turning on all the lights you can.
- Point out how without light, there is complete darkness. There is also no amount of darkness that can extinguish even the tiniest light. Light will always overcome darkness just as Christ will always overcome evil.
- How can we obtain more light in our lives?
PONDER & DISCUSS
- When we are seeking truth, will we find it if we are searching with a doubting heart?
- Can the Holy Ghost teach us if our hearts are not open to finding the truth?
QUOTE BY PRESIDENT RUSSELL M. NELSON:
“Choose to believe in Jesus Christ. If you have doubts about God the Father and His Beloved Son or the validity of the Restoration or the veracity of Joseph Smith’s divine calling as a prophet, choose to believe and stay faithful. Take your questions to the Lord and to other faithful sources. Study with the desire to believe rather than with the hope that you can find a flaw in the fabric of a prophet’s life or a discrepancy in the scriptures. Stop increasing your doubts by rehearsing them with other doubters. Allow the Lord to lead you on your journey of spiritual discovery.”
