PERSONAL STUDY [1:36]
1. Jesus learns of the death of John the Baptist and sought solitude but he was followed by a multitude of people.
2. Jesus heals their sick and miraculously fed more than five thousand of them.
3. Jesus tells his disciples to get into a ship and cross the sea while he sends the multitude away and goes up to the mountain to pray.
4. While Jesus is praying, disciples struggle to get across the sea because of a storm. The wind was contrary or in other words, was blowing in the opposite direction of where they were wanting to go.
5. The distance to cross the sea was about five miles and should have been crossable in two to three hours in good weather but the scriptures tell us that Christ came to the disciples on the water in the fourth watch which means about 3 am- 6 am. So disciples were struggling against powerful wind and waves for what could have been anywhere from 9-12 hours.
6. Disciples see someone walking on the water. They think it is a spirit and are afraid.
7. Jesus said unto them, “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.”
8. Matthew 14: 29-31 it says:
- And [Jesus] said Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
- But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
- And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
9. Patricia T. Holland, the wife of Jeffrey R. Holland, spoke at a BYU Devotional in 1984 and her talk was entitled Walking on the Water. In her talk, she comments on how as children, we all had that undoubting faith. She says:
“I have often heard, ‘When I was a child I believed everything was possible. I believed I could grow up to become anything I imagined. But then I grew up! There was anxiety in my home. I had self-defeating experiences in high school. My mission was more difficult than I expected. Now I’m often confused, depressed, and afraid.'”
10. Somewhere between our childhood and adulthood is when most of us lose that childlike faith we once had.
11. Madeleine L’Engle once said: “Peter was able to walk on the water until he remembered he didn’t know how.”(Walking on Water [New York: Bantam Books 1982], p. 19).
12. President Howard W. Hunter once said:
“It is my firm belief that if as individual people,…we could, like Peter, fix our eyes on Jesus, we too might walk triumphantly over ‘the swelling waves of disbelief’ and remain ‘unterrified amid the rising winds of doubt.’ But if we turn away our eyes from him in whom we must believe, as it is so easy to do and the world is so much tempted to do, if we look to the power and fury of those terrible and destructive elements around us rather than to him who can help and save us, then we shall inevitably sink in a sea of conflict and sorrow and despair” (“The Beacon in the Harbor of Peace,” Ensign, Nov. 1992, 19).

Love those you teach. Everything the Savior did throughout His earthly ministry was motivated by love – His love for His father and His love for all of us. Did you know that through the power of the Holy Ghost, we too can be filled with that kind of love towards those we teach?
You may recall what Elder Uchtdorf said in his talk Believe, Love, Do – when he said this love isn’t the “gift-card, throwaway, move-on-to-other-things love. It isn’t a love that is spoken of and then forgotten. It is not a “let me know if there is anything I can do” sort of love. The love God speaks of is the kind that enters our hearts when we awake in the morning, stays with us throughout the day, and swells in our hearts as we give voice to our prayers of gratitude at evening’s end…Through the lens of pure love, we see immortal beings of infinite potential and worth and beloved sons and daughters of Almighty God. Once we see through that lens, we cannot discount, disregard, or discriminate against anyone.”
How do you start? How do you begin to love those you teach? You can begin by praying for them.
Just last Sunday and sister shared in Relief Society how impressed she was with her friend. She was with her friend one time and an alarm went off on her friend’s phone and when this sister questioned her friend about the alarm her friend told her that it was to remind her to pray for those she ministers to. Right now she has sisters that won’t let her visit them or make contact, but that doesn’t stop her from praying for them.
What a great example and I encourage all of us, if you don’t already do so, to begin praying for those you teach.
