PERSONAL STUDY [2:00]

1. Story by Keith B. McMullin, that was given in the April 2010 General Conference in a talk entitled Our Path of Duty. Click HERE to listen.

2. Matthew 5:43-44

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.

3. D&C 122: 7 & 8. This is when Joseph Smith is a prisoner at Liberty Jail and the Lord says:

7 And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.

8 The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?

4. No matter what wrong is done to us, no matter how horrible we are treated, Christ has been there. He has been through it all. There is nothing that you can go through that the Savior himself has not experienced. And there is no better example of how we should treat our enemies than to look at how Christ treated his.

Jesus was the most loving and kind person to have ever lived on this earth, He was perfect in every sense of the word – perfect in how he treated others, served others and yet there were those who despised Him and persecuted Him. Soldiers who took Jesus and beat him with whips. They made fun of Him. They made a crown of thorns and put it on his head making him bleed. They put a purple robe on Him and mockingly bowed before Him calling Him the King of the Jews. They laughed at him and spit on him. They nailed his hands and feet to a cross and left him there to die. This was not fair. He did not deserve this, He did nothing wrong. But he did not complain, or yell, or fight back. He had the power to make them stop but He didn’t. He put up with it. He dealt with it. The scriptures say that “Jesus held his peace” (Matthew 26:63) and forgave them all. “Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)

5. In a talk by Elder Uchtdorf entitled The Merciful Obtain Mercy he says:

“In a world of accusations and unfriendliness, it is easy to gather and cast stones. But before we do so, let us remember the words of the One who is our Master and model: ‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone.’ Brothers and sisters, let us put down our stones. Let us be kind. Let us forgive. Let us talk peacefully with each other. Let the love of God fill our hearts. ‘Let us do good unto all men.’”

6. Elder Uchtdorf also said:

“When it comes to hating, gossiping, ignoring, ridiculing, holding grudges, or wanting to cause harm, please apply the following: Stop it!”

7. As Pres. Monson once said, “To be angry is to yield to the influence of Satan. No one can make us angry. It is our choice.”

8. Quote: Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.

9.  My wise younger sister once told me, “You can love someone who doesn’t love you back, and there’s nothing they can do about it.” I love that point of view!

10. Love is the source of all truth and it is the light that dispels the darkness. Those treating us unkindly are in darkness, at least they are in that moment – because hurtful, hateful comments, actions, and/or feelings are definitely not blue skies and sunshine 😉 so why not shine a light for them to see. Shine brightly for those who are in the dark at that moment. Shine your light by showing love and compassion and by praying for them.

11. As Elder Uchtdorf once said:

“As we open our hearts to the glowing dawn of the love of God, the darkness and cold of animosity and envy will eventually fade.”

TEACHING TIP [22:08]

1. Did you know that if you are a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there is a 99.9% chance you have already been successful as a member missionary? It’s true. Whether it be….

Sharing your beliefs online
Befriending a newly baptized member of the church
Ministering to a less active member of the church
Answering a question about the church to someone who asked
Feeding the missionaries
Sending out your own missionary
Living your religion
Bringing a nonmember or less active friend to a church function
Or teaching your own children the gospel.

If you have done any one of those things, pat yourself on the back – you HAVE BEEN successful in being a member missionary! Just because you may not have gotten anyone baptized, I promise you, you have not FAILED at being a Member Missionary.

2. The Power of Everyday Missionaries by Clayton M. Christensen. Available in Kindle, hardcover, paperback, and audio.
