The Sacrament by John Bytheway

When my youngest son was turning 8 years old I wanted to get a book for him that helped to teach the importance of the Sacrament. As I was in Seagull Book Store in Mesa, AZ I came across a book by John Bytheway called The Sacrament. I’m a HUGE Bytheway Fan! Plus the book is in poem form, and I LOVE poems! So this was a win-win, gotta-have-it kind of purchase. The book was not only perfect for what I was wanting, but the illustrations by Nathan Pinnock were beautiful too.

At the back of the book, John Bytheway has a section called “Symbols of the Sacrament” where he has listed several things that are related to the sacrament and what they symbolize. For example:

The Cloth. A white cloth covers the bread and water trays just like the white cloth that covered Jesus’ body when he was buried in the tomb. The next time you’re at church, look closely at the sacrament table and see if it doesn’t resemble a body covered by a cloth. Also, read John 20:7 and notice what the resurrected Jesus did with the cloth before he left the tomb.

This made for a perfect family discussion after reading the book. It made for a wonderful Family Home Evening on the Sacrament. It helped all of my kids, including myself, to really think about the Sacrament and all that it means and symbolizes. I have since used the book in lessons and talks as well.

The video below is a portion of the book read by John Bytheway. This allows you to hear a part of the book and see some of the beautiful illustrations.
